Updates
How Kairavo updates itself, how to turn automatic updates off, and how to disable them with a policy on managed devices.
Kairavo keeps itself up to date. It downloads new versions in the background and installs them when you quit the app. You can turn this off for yourself, or your organisation can turn it off with a policy and deploy versions through Intune instead.
How automatic updates work
- Source. Kairavo reads the public Kairavo releases feed on GitHub. An update check is a plain HTTPS request to GitHub. It contains no tenant data, license data or product data.
- Schedule. The first check runs 15 seconds after the app starts. After that, Kairavo checks every 6 hours while it runs, including while it runs in the tray.
- Download. When a new version is available, it downloads in the background. Preferences shows the progress.
- Install. The downloaded version installs when you quit Kairavo. You can also install it right away with Restart and update.
- Stable releases only. Kairavo never installs preview releases and never moves to an older version.
- Signature check on Windows. Right before the downloaded setup program runs, Kairavo checks its digital signature again. If the check fails, or does not finish within 30 seconds, the update is not installed and your current version keeps running.
- License required. Kairavo checks for updates only while at least one tenant holds a valid license. When no tenant has one, updates pause. They resume on their own once a tenant is licensed again.
Closing the window does not quit Kairavo when Keep running in the tray is on. To install a downloaded update, select Restart and update, or quit from the tray menu with Quit Kairavo.
Check the update status
In the menu bar, select Go > Settings (Ctrl+2 on Windows, Cmd+2 on macOS).
Select Preferences in the sidebar.
Find the Updates section. It shows the current state and a Check for updates button. When a version is ready, the button changes to Restart and update.
The Updates section shows one of these messages:
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Updates are checked in the background. | Automatic updates are on and no check has reported yet. |
| Checking for updates. | A check is running. |
| You have the latest version. | No newer version is available. |
| Downloading version X (N%). | A new version is downloading. |
| Version X is ready and installs when you restart. | The update is downloaded. It installs when you quit or select Restart and update. |
| Updates pause while no tenant has a valid license. | No signed-in tenant has a valid license, so Kairavo does not check. |
| Automatic updates are off. | You or a policy turned automatic updates off. |
| The last update check failed: ... | The check, the download or the install failed. The message says why. |
Turn off automatic updates
Open Go > Settings, then Preferences.
Under Startup and updates, turn off Automatic updates.
The change applies at once. Kairavo stops checking, and a version that is already downloaded is not installed. To update by hand, turn the setting back on, or install the new version yourself.
Disable updates with a policy
On managed devices, you can disable automatic updates with a policy. Use this when your organisation deploys Kairavo versions through Intune and wants every device on the version it approved.
When the policy is set, the Automatic updates toggle is turned off and greyed out, with the hint "Turned off by your organisation's policy." Kairavo makes no update checks and no downloads.
Kairavo reads the policy when it starts. After you set or remove the policy, quit Kairavo and start it again.
Create a REG_DWORD value named DisableAutoUpdate with the data 1 under one of these keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Kairavofor every user of the device.HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Kairavofor one user.
Kairavo checks both keys. Only the value 1 disables updates. Any other value, or no value, leaves the in-app setting in control.
To set the value by hand from an elevated command prompt:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Kairavo" /v DisableAutoUpdate /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /fDeploy with Intune. Deploy the value with any configuration profile your organisation uses to write registry values, or with a remediation. For a remediation, create a detection script and a remediation script, and set Run script in 64-bit PowerShell to Yes.
Detection script:
$path = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Kairavo'
$current = Get-ItemProperty -Path $path -Name 'DisableAutoUpdate' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
if ($current -and $current.DisableAutoUpdate -eq 1) {
Write-Output 'Kairavo automatic updates are disabled.'
exit 0
}
Write-Output 'Kairavo automatic updates are not disabled.'
exit 1Remediation script:
$path = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Kairavo'
if (-not (Test-Path -Path $path)) {
New-Item -Path $path -Force | Out-Null
}
New-ItemProperty -Path $path -Name 'DisableAutoUpdate' -PropertyType DWord -Value 1 -Force | Out-NullNetwork requirements
Update checks and downloads use the operating system network settings, including the proxy, PAC file and trusted certificates. Allow HTTPS to github.com and the GitHub hosts it serves release downloads from. If you disable updates with a policy, Kairavo makes no requests to GitHub for updates.
